Harwin Dekker

Who are you?
Hi! I’m Harwin Dekker, 20 years young.

What do you do?
I study Taalwetenschap (Linguïstics) at the RUG, where I’ll start in the first year this september. I’m also the chairman of the Socie in the upcoming academic year, and I work some hours a week on the veggies & fruit section in Jumbo. I like to spend the time I have left going out, meeting my friends, and a little bit of Fortnite on my PS4.

Why are you a member of Commotie?
I started CIS last year, and I mostly joined because I wanted to get to know more people and make friends, in which I think I succeeded brilliantly! Also, like everyone else of Commotie, you can’t ignore the fact that the members fee pays itself back if you buy your new books through our website.

Are you an active member as well?
As I said, I’ll be chairman of the Socie in the upcoming year! It seemed like a fun thing to do, and I know the Socie’s activities very well as I was a member of that committee past year. The Socie is a committee that’s responsible for a lot of the fun and social activities that we do every year, and being responsible for fun is something I would really like to be!

Which activity of Commotie is the most memorable?
As much as I loved the trip abroad to Dublin (love you Reiscie), I can’t answer this question without nominating an activity I organised myself, can I? That means I’ll have to say that the Active Members Weekend of last year was the most memorable to me. It was the first time I met all active members of Commotie, and I was surprised to see that they were all just (or in some occasions, even more) crazy and fun as I find myself.

What are you most proud of?
My 6-month adventure of trying to find a room in Groningen is something that will haunt me for the rest of my days, so I’m very proud that I found a room with 3 great housemates after 15 hospi’s. Oh, and the fact that I got my driver’s license after the first try is pretty cool as well.

At what moment do you feel the happiest?
Every first Tuesday of the month, when I’m dancing in the middle of ‘t Golden Fust, where Commotie has their monthly drinks. Talking to, singing along to High School Musical with and dance-battle with all your friends while enjoying cheap beer, what’s not to love?

What is on top of your bucketlist?
Getting all 60 points in an academic year.

For what in the world can someone wake you up?
Chicken Nuggets with sweet chili, fresh bapao from Albert Heijn, a game of Fortnite squads, or a Gin&Tonic. Or all of those together.

To what places do you want to travel the most?
A trip to Japan. I think it would be cool to be asked for pictures by small Asians, who of course all want to put their Instagram on fleek with showing a 2 meter tall blonde cheesehead like me.

What ability do you really want to have?
The ability to always make people pay for my drinks without having to ever pay them back. Maximaal lenen is maximaal leven, but I’d rather spend my money on eating out everyday.

What is your biggest guilty pleasure?
Every time before I have a week of exams coming up, I start rewatching all episodes of the British version of First Dates. That’s probably why I didn’t get my BSA last year though.

What don’t you like?
Getting 2nd in Fortnite solo’s, horses, fruitflies, sitting down on your bike’s saddle and realising it had soaked up all the water from last night’s rain and having to walk around with a wet ass for the rest of the day.

What would you do with a million euros?
Buy my own house in the center of Groningen (with a parking spot for the car that I’ll buy with it) and spend a lot of money to sponsor the Commotie Lustrum next year. I want free drinks in return, of course.

With which member of Commotie would you want to be stuck on an uninhabited island?
Rik Batenburg. I think he’ll be able to cook a chef-worthy meal with nothing but sand, seaweed and grass, and he has a great Robinson-like look to him.

Which two members of Commotie are secretly meant for each other?Chiel and Sanne Heitkamp (sorry Lard).

To whom do you want to pass on the keyboard and why?
I would like to pass it on to Sander Polling, who only just joined Commotie after getting dragged along to every activity by Lard for the past 5 years.
